Last Saturday we talked about The Gardens of Babylon in historical tradition and in the studies from 800 to the present day. The Hanging Gardens have influenced theatrical works, video games and comics of the modern world.
They are the backdrop for two plays of 800. The first is that of Semiramide, a tragic opera in two acts by Gioachino Rossini, libretto by Gaetano Rossi. The play is taken from Tragédie Sémiramis de Voltaire and the life of Queen Semiramis. Debuted at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice the 3rd of February in 1823 with Isabella Colbran, Filippo Galli (bass) and Luciano Mariani. Semiramis is a complex figure, according to some ancient historians was the wife of King Nino and mother of Nynias. Herodotus considers her as a great queen, the daughter of a goddess, who conquered Media, Egypt and Ethiopia and built the walls and gardens of Babylon. Semiramis is reconnected to Shammuramat, an Assyrian queen, wife of the Assyrian king Shamshi-Adad V (ruled from 811 to 808 B.C.) and regent for her son Nirari-Addu III.
Another play is the Nabucco, third work (the full title is Nebuchadnezzar) of Giuseppe Verdi. Composed to a libretto by Themistocles Solera, Nabucco made its debut on 9th of March in 1842 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. The protagonist of the work is Nebuchadnezzar II (634 B.C. – 562 B.C.). He ascended the throne after the death of his father Nabopolassar and submitted the kingdom of Judah, deporting the Jews in Babylon and destroying the temple of Solomon. Under the atmosphere of this event, which takes place on Nabucco, although here the ruler submits him to the God of Judah.
The seven wonders were the subject, always in the ’800, of a Disney’s comic book series written by Fabio Michelini and alternately designed by Giuseppe della Santa and Maurizio Amendola. Among the seven wonders of the ducks stands out the “Hanging Gardens of Paperlonia”. The episode begins with Uncle Scrooge that talks to Huey, Dewey, and Louie about the history of gardens of Paperlonia cultivated by Paper-Iris (ancestor of Donald Duck) under the order of Emperor Paperucco Golden Son. The story focuses on wilfulness of Paper- Iris to maintain the gardens and Archim who wants to plant the seeds of “pansy” of thought, so he can always have great ideas.
In 2005 the Gardens were backdrop, also, a video game “Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones.” The game belongs to the class action and it was produced by Ubisoft. It’s the last chapter of the trilogy of the saga of the sands of Prince of Persia, that began with “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”.
Therefore, The Gardens of Babylon did not influence only the ancient historians still trying to imagine how it could be this wonder. The imagery of a spectacular garden with trees and flowers of every kind, unusual in a place like the Near East, fascinated researchers and artists at all times. These are the subject of numerous books, such as the archaeologist Valerio Massimo Manfredi that in his book “Le meraviglie del mondo antico” starts from the detailed description of ancient historians and successive studies about Gardens of Babylon, followed by the other wonders, but the historian adds an octave.
Lo scorso sabato abbiamo parlato dei Giardini pensili di Babilonia nella tradizione storica e in quella degli studi dall’800 fino ai nostri giorni. I Giardini pensili hanno influenzato opere teatrali, videogiochi e fumetti del mondo moderno.
Essi fanno da sfondo a due opere teatrali dell’800. La prima è quella di Semiramide, un melodramma tragico in due atti di Gioachino Rossini, su libretto di Gaetano Rossi. Semiramide è ricollegata alla regina assira Shammuramat, moglie del re assiro Shamshi-Adad V (che governò dall’ 811 all’808 a.C.) e reggente per il figlio Addu-Nirari III.
Altra opera teatrale è il Nabucco, terza opera (il titolo originale completo è Nabucodonosor) di Giuseppe Verdi. Composta su libretto di Temistocle Solera, Nabucco fece il suo debutto il 9 marzo 1842 al Teatro alla Scala di Milano. Protagonista dell’opera è Nabucodonosor II (634 a.C. ca – 562 a.C. ca). Egli salì al trono alla morte del padre Nabopolassar e sottomise il regno di Giuda, deportando gli ebrei in Babilonia e distruggendo il tempio di Salomone. Sotto l’atmosfera di questo evento che si svolge il Nabucco, anche se qui il sovrano si sottomette al Dio di Giuda.
Le sette meraviglie furono oggetto, sempre nell’ 800, di una serie a fumetti Disney scritta da Fabio Michelini e disegnata alternativamente da Giuseppe della Santa e Maurizio Amendola. Tra le sette meraviglie dei paperi spiccano i “Giardini pensili di Paperlonia”. L’episodio inizia con Zio Paperone che racconta a Qui, Quo e Qua la storia dei Giardini di Paperlonia coltivati da Paper-Iris (antenato di Paperino) sotto l’ordine dell’imperatore Paperucco D’oro Son. La storia si concentra sull’ostinatezza di Paper- Iris di preservare il Giardino e di Archim che vuole piantare i semi della “viola del pensiero”, in modo tale da avere sempre idee geniali.
Nel 2005 i Giardini fecero da sfondo, anche, ad un videogioco “Prince of Persia: I due troni”. Il gioco appartiene alla categoria azione ed è stato prodotto da Ubisoft . È l’ultimo capitolo della trilogia riguardante la saga delle sabbie di Prince of Persia iniziata con Prince of Persia: Le sabbie del tempo.
Dunque, i Giardini di Babilonia non hanno influenzato solo gli antichi storici, ancora oggi si cerca di immaginare come poteva essere questa meraviglia. L’immaginario di uno spettacolare Giardino con alberi e fiori di ogni tipo, inusuale in un luogo come quello del Vicino Oriente, affascina studiosi e artisti in ogni tempo. Questi sono oggetto di numerosi libri, come quello dell’archeologo Valerio Massimo Manfredi che nel suo volume “Le meraviglie del mondo antico” parte dalla descrizione dettagliata di storici antichi e dei successivi studi sui Giardini di Babilonia, a cui seguono le altre meraviglie, ma lo storico ne aggiunge un’ottava.
