Abu Tbeirah

At last, the 3rd campaign at Abu Tbeirah has begun! We promise to inform You on all our activities and results in real time (as far as the internet connection and the sand storms allow this…).

We left from Rome on September the 15th at 7:45 o’clock in the evening (well, the flight was delayed  40 minutes because of the weather conditions) with a few luggages, as You can see from the pictures (25 kg overweight!

Hopefully it was not our overweight the reason for the delay!). Well, no problem with Turkish Airlines: they are always very sensitive with the problems of archaeologists!

We arrived in Istanbul and waited there for 6 hours: at 4:00 0′clock in the morning we left to Basrah. It’s always a great emotion to wake up and see southern Mesopotamia from the plane! You cannot imagine how flat it is…

Ghani, our driver and collaborator, was waiting for us together with the escort of the police to take us to Ur, where we have the house of the Mission. During the trip we were stopped by the Iraqi Army because they had to burst an old bomb of the Saddam Period. It is really shocking to feel the rumbling of the explosion which seems to arrive from the center of the earth!

But at the end everything is forgotten at the sight of the extraordinary Ziqqurat of Ur…

E finalmente la terza campagna ad Abu Tbeirah è iniziata! Ci impegniamo ad aggiornarvi su tutte le nostre attività e sui risultati in tempo reale (per quanto  la connessione internet e le tempeste di sabbia ce lo permetteranno …).

Siamo partiti da Roma il 15 settembre alle 7:45 di sera (beh, il volo era in ritardo 40 minuti a causa delle condizioni meteo), con pochi bagagli, come si può vedere dalle foto (25 kg in sovrappeso! Avremo fatto ridardare noi il volo, con il nostro sovrappeso? ). Comunque, nessun problema con la Turkish Airlines: sono sempre molto sensibili ai problemi degli archeologi!

Siamo arrivati ​​ad Istanbul e abbiamo atteso 6 ore: alle 4:00 del mattino siamo partiti per Basrah.

È sempre una grande emozione svegliarsi e vedere la Mesopotamia meridionale dall’aereo! Non potete immaginare quanto sia piatta …

Ghani, il nostro autista e collaboratore, ci aspettava insieme con la scorta della polizia per portarci a Ur,  dove si trova la casa della Missione. Durante il viaggio siamo stati fermati dall’esercito iracheno perché dovevano fare esplodere una vecchia bomba del Periodo di Saddam. È davvero scioccante sentire il rimbombo dell’esplosione che sembra arrivare dal centro della terra!

Ma alla fine tutto è dimenticato, alla vista della straordinaria Ziqqurat di Ur …
