With the help of our good friends Dhaher, who is in charge of our safety when we work in Nasiriyah, and Amir the team made on October the 17th an expedition to the marshes in the area of Chubaish. Here we met Dr Jasim Al-Asadi, who is the director of Nature Iraq, a project of revitalizing the marshes after the terrible damages caused by the intervention during the Saddam period, when a third channel was dug for military reasons in order to deviate waters from the two rivers Tigris and Euphrates. As Dr Jasim, who is also a very good friend of mine, showed to us with pride, after drying that channel, the natural environment, unique all over the world, is slowly coming back to its former beauty and richness: water buffalos, birds of the most extraordinary beauty and elegance, luxuriant reeds up to 6 meters tall, a natural life with the most astonishing biodiversity…
Through Jasim, we could meet the people settled in the area, who live in the reed-houses (in Arabic, mudhaif) a symbiotic life with that hard and wonderful environment, using the poor materials of the area (reeds and mud) in the most profitable and artistic ways… They received us with courtesy and smiles, showing us their simple and modest everyday life with a touching enthusiasm.
Once in the life everybody should visit the Marshlands in Southern Iraq. It is a magic place, where man and nature have found a common language and have lived together in the repetitive cycle of the seasons for thousands of years. Here the Sumerian civilizations developed and created that peculiar relationship between landscape and human life, made up by respect of the environment and art of subsistence, which lasted until the present day, in a way, unaltered.
Con l’aiuto dei nostri buoni amici Dhaher, che si occupa della nostra sicurezza quando lavoriamo a Nassiriya, e Amir il gruppo di Abu Tbeirah ha potuto organizzare una spedizione alle paludi della zona di Chubaish il 17 ottobre. Qui abbiamo incontrato il dottor Jasim, che è il direttore del progetto di rivitalizzazione delle paludi dopo i terribili danni causati dall’intervento nel periodo di Saddam, quando un terzo canale è stato scavato per ragioni militari al fine di deviare le acque dei due fiumi Tigri ed Eufrate. Jasim ha mostrato a noi con orgoglio, come dopo l’essiccazione di quel canale l’ambiente naturale, unico nel suo genere in tutto il mondo, stia lentamente tornando alla sua antica bellezza e la ricchezza : bufali d’acqua, uccelli della più straordinaria bellezza ed eleganza, canne lussureggianti fino a 6 metri di altezza, una vita naturale con la biodiversità più sorprendente…
Grazie ai buoni auspici di Jasim, abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di incontrare le persone che abitano nella zona, le quali vivono in case fatte di canne (in arabo, mudhaif) una vita simbiotica con quell’ambiente duro e meraviglioso, utilizzando gli unici poveri materiali della zona (canne e fango) nei modi più intelligenti e artistici… Loro ci hanno accolto con cortesia e sorrisi, mostrandoci la loro vita quotidiana semplice e modesta con un entusiasmo commovente.
Una volta nella vita tutti dovrebbero visitare le paludi nel sud dell’Iraq. E ‘un luogo magico, dove uomo e natura hanno trovato un linguaggio comune e hanno vissuto insieme nel ciclo ripetitivo delle stagioni per migliaia di anni. Qui i Sumeri seppero creare e sviluppare quel peculiare rapporto tra paesaggio e cultura, fatto di rispetto per l’ambiente e arte della sopravvivenza, che è durato fino ai giorni nostri, in un certo senso, inalterato.
