We share with our Tell Kheiber friends the honour of living in a house located in the wonderful archaeological area of Ur, somehow protected by the spirits of our famous colleagues who dug in the site at the beginning of the last century.

Ur is a place symbol of the Iraqi culture and history and in the next future will be surely one of the most visited place in Iraq and in the Middle East.

Before getting into the ancient city, you must show your access permit or ticket to the guards that are on the Main gate (make sure you have bought it previously in the Museum of Nasiriyah!). The guards of the gate are usually those who help us during the excavations, escorting us quickly through the check-points that separate Ur from Abu Tbeirah.

The second person that you’ll meet is Ali Kadhem Ghanim, our friend and colleague, the SBAH (State Board for Antiquities and Heritage) superintendent of the site. He is not only in charge of the preservation and rehabilitation of the site but also takes care of both our missions at Abu Tbeirah and Tell Kheiber.

The road from the Gate to the Ziqqurat will be done with the help of an electric car driven by one of the members of Dhaif Family (our wonderful Nasrallah and Ghani).
Dhaif Mohsen is th grandson of the guardian of Ur appointed by Sir Leonard Woolley. Dhaif knows several languages and speaks english very well: he learnt it watching television and practicing with the soldiers of the American Tallil Air-Base once located near the Ziqqurat until two years ago.

Dhaif, the guardian and Guide of ur site

nows every single brick of the structures and has a perfect archaeological formation. He has many fascinating stories to tell! He told us once that while he was helping in cleaning an excavation wall during some Iraqi archaeological activities on the site, he found an Archive with a huge amount of Old Babylonian tablets… The Iraqi government gave him an economic reward and he bought a car (the same car he is still driving on the site). Another Dhaif adventure led to the discovery, after a day of rain, of a wonderful gold vessel emerging from the soil.
This is just to say that you cannot miss the experience of have Dhaif as your guide on the site (he is in fact officiall guide of Ur).

Condividiamo con i nostri amici di Tell Kheiber l’onore di vivere in una casa situata nella splendida zona archeologica di Ur , in un certo senso protetta dagli spiriti dei nostri famosi colleghi che scavarono nel sito all’inizio del secolo scorso.

Ur è un luogo simbolo della cultura e della storia irachena e nel prossimo futuro sarà sicuramente uno dei luoghi più visitati in Iraq e in Medio Oriente .

Prima di entrare nella città antica , è necessario mostrare il vostro permesso di accesso o biglietto alle guardie che si trovano presso la porta principale (assicuratevi di aver acquistato in precedenza il biglietto di ingresso nel Museo di Nasiriyah! ) . Le guardie del cancello di solito sono quelle che ci aiutano durante gli scavi , scortandoci rapidamente attraverso i check – point che separano Ur da Abu Tbeirah.

La seconda persona che si incontra è Ali Kadhem Ghanim , il nostro amico e collega, sovrintendente del sito incaricato dallo SBAH (State Board for Anitquities and Heritage). Egli non è solo responsabile della conservazione e della riabilitazione del sito, ma si prende anche cura di entrambe le nostre missioni ad Abu Tbeirah e Tell Kheiber.

La strada che dalla porta alla Ziqqurat sarà percorsa con l’aiuto di una macchina elettrica guidata da uno dei membri della Famiglia di Dhaif (i nostri meravigliosi Nasrallah e Ghani ) .
Dhaif Mohsen è il nipote del guardiano di Ur nominato dal Sir Leonard Woolley . Dhaif conosce diverse lingue e parla molto bene l’inglese: lo ha appreso ascoltando la televisione e praticandolo con i militari della base aerea americana di Tallil situata nei pressi del Ziqqurat fino a due anni fa.
Dhaif è la memoria storica di Ur, conosce ogni singolo mattone delle strutture e ha una perfetta formazione archeologica. Racconta sempre che una volta stava aiutando a pulire una parete di scavo durante alcune attività archeologiche irachene sul sito e ha trovato un archivio con un enorme quantità di tavolette… Il governo iracheno gli ha dato come ricompensa i soldi per comprare un auto (la stessa vettura che egli guida ancora sul sito) . Un altro avventura di Dhaif ha portato alla scoperta, dopo una giornata di pioggia, di un vaso d’oro meraviglioso che emergeva dal suolo.
Questi due piccoli racconti solo per dirvi che non si può perdere l’esperienza di avere Dhaif come vostra guida sul sito (in realtà egli è ufficialmente la guida di Ur) .
